Ross County midfielder Graham Carey believes their 2-2 draw with St Mirren at the weekend is further proof the Staggies are heading in the right direction.
County bounced back from the previous week’s 5-0 thumping by Celtic to take the lead at St Mirren Park thanks to a Paul Quinn header. Adam Drury equalised for the Buddies just before half-time before Carey netted against his former club to put County back in front. However, a goal from Jeroen Tesselaar ensured St Mirren took a point in a pulsating Paisley game.
The Staggies remain at the foot of the Scottish Premiership, two points behind Motherwell, but Carey is feeling optimistic about his team’s chances of escaping the danger zone.
He said: “We let ourselves down against Celtic and we all knew that. We just gave them far too much respect. Against St Mirren we needed to earn the right to play. There were a lot of positives to take out of it, especially from the second half, and we’ll be looking to take that forward now.
“I thought in the two games
before the Celtic match we were
on the right track. If you take the Celtic game out of things we’re undefeated in three. The team is gelling now. It’s onwards and upwards, hopefully.”
Carey admitted both sides deserved to take something from a hard-fought contest at St Mirren Park, although the point will please the Staggies more than the Buddies who are still searching for a first home win of the season.
He added: “It was an eventful afternoon and 2-2 was fair. We didn’t play particularly well in the first half but we dug in. That’s something the manager has instilled in us. I thought in the second half we were a lot better and we could have won the game. But they had a few chances as well.
“Playing against St Mirren as one of my old clubs was something I thought about when I came back before but now I’ve moved on.
“I just wanted to put in a good shift for the team. It was good to get a goal as on previous occasions I haven’t particularly played well against St Mirren. So, it was good to put in a decent performance, although the team is more important than any individual. There are a lot of positives to take out of the game and we can move on now.”
