Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes hopes to see Niall McGinn back among the goals on a regular basis after the Northern Ireland international ended his drought against Hamilton Accies.
The midfielder scored his fourth goal of the season with a superb lob in the 3-0 win at Pittodrie on Saturday.
It was McGinn first goal for the Dons since netting in a 2-0 win against Partick Thistle on August 30.
McGinn’s lack of contribution to the goals tally has been troubling the player and McInnes hopes the former Celtic player’s fine finish on Saturday is the first of many.
McInnes said: “I had hoped we could maybe show more quality in the second half on Saturday and with Niall’s finish, certainly that was the case.
“It was a top finish, it would grace any league.
“Niall has been a bit down that he’s not scored as many goals, but his general play’s been absolutely fine and he’s a big player for us.
“Like any attacking player he wants to score so hopefully they will begin to flow again for him.”
McGinn came close to a second when he struck the crossbar for the second match running and McInnes wants to see his players take more of the chances they are creating.
He said: “Niall’s was an important goal because it knocked the enthusiasm out of Hamilton, which isn’t easy to do – they’ve got a lot of spirit about them.
“From then on, we only scored one more goal but we passed up a lot of opportunities but were very comfortable in the end.”
Saturday’s win was Aberdeen’s ninth in the last 13 matches and moved the Dons up to fourth, three points behind Dundee United, their opponents on Saturday.
The transfer window opens on January 1 but the manager said: “Results and injuries will direct my thoughts on whether anything is required, but I hope we will go into the January window in good form.
“We’re always looking to improve the squad and if there are players out there we will look at it.
“We have the option to recall Joe Shaugnessy and the other loan players and we will make that assessment in the next few weeks.”
