Ryan Gauld’s career developed one stage further last night as the youngster made his league debut for Sporting Lisbon.
Gauld came on as a 65th minute substitute and had an instant impact, nutmegging an opponent before feeding the ball to former Manchester United man Nani who crossed for João Mario to head home – just two minutes after the lad from Laurencekirk had entered the pitch.
The former Dundee United man has spent the majority of his career in Portugal playing for Sporting’s B side, however, he at the tail end of last year he made his debut for the first team, playing in a 2-0 cup victory over Vitoria Guimaraes.
Gauld followed that up by producing a man-of-the-match performance in a 1-0 win over Boavista in Portugal’s League Cup last week. The 19-year-old won the penalty which secured victory and the video below shows why he was named man of the match.

The youngster received his first call-up for the Scotland squad in September last year and, should his career in Portugal continue to develop at this rate, we should be seeing plenty more of him in and around Gordon Strachan’s national team.
