Elgin’s Douglas Ross and Aberdeen’s Alastair Mather will be the assistants for Scottish Cup final referee Willie Collum in the big game between Caley Thistle and Falkirk at Hampden on May 30.
The honour caps a whirlwind period for Ross, a Moray councillor, who last week finished runner-up to sitting Moray MP Angus Robertson in the general election.
On Sunday, Ross was running the line in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, when Scots referee John Beaton was butted by Al Hilal midfielder Salem Al Dawsari in a highly-charged derby against Al Nasr.
Three players, including Al Dawsari, were sent off while eight others were booked.
Al Dawsari was yesterday given a six-game ban.
Ross said: “It has been a remarkable few days. I finished second to Angus Robertson in the vote in Moray when I polled 15,319 votes, the biggest percentage increase of any Conservative candidate in Scotland.
“At the weekend I was one of John Beaton’s assistants in the Saudi game which resulted in the butting incident, so it has been quite a memorable few days.
“I was an assistant in last year’s League Cup final between Aberdeen and Caley Thistle at Parkhead.
“But the thrill of being picked for this season’s Scottish Cup final, again involving Caley Thistle, has been heightened as it will be the first time I’ve had an appointment at the national stadium.”
Ross will run the line in another important game this weekend before preparing for an even bigger date following the Hampden showpiece – his wedding.
He said: “Alastair Mather and I will also assist referee John McKendrick in the pyramid play-off second leg between Montrose and Brora Rangers at Links Park on Saturday.
“I had been hoping that my wife-to-be Krystle would have come down with me to watch the cup final but we’re getting married two weeks later and while I will be running the line at the national stadium she will later be enjoying her hen night with all her pals.”
Mather, 37, is delighted to be officiating at the cup final, having previously run the line in two Scottish Cup semi-finals.
He said: “This will be the biggest game of my refereeing career as it really is a great honour to get the Scottish Cup final, it is the big one. I have done two semi-finals before, one of them at Hampden when Falkirk played Hibs two seasons ago and the other at Ibrox last year when Rangers faced Dundee United.
“I don’t recall a time when Douglas, myself and Willie Collum have been out in a team together.”
