Former Ross County midfielder Martin Woods regrets leaving the Staggies but says his family had to come first.
Woods rejected the offer of a new contract at Victoria Park, opting instead to join newly-promoted English League 1 outfit Shrewsbury Town on a two-year contract.
The 29-year-old made a strong impression after joining the Staggies on a free transfer in October, having been without a club since leaving Barnsley last summer. However, Woods says it had always been his intention to seek a club in England in order to move closer to his son, Jacob.
Woods said: “I’m leaving behind a great bunch of boys and I’ve got my regrets about that. It isn’t an easy dressing room to leave.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time with County. It’s just been so hard being away from my wee boy.
“This opportunity came up and at a good club. I was looking to get back to England because it was hard to be away from my family.
“So I’m leaving one good club for another.”
Woods believes County can progress next season, adding: “I’m leaving Ross County on a high. It would have been far worse to be packing my bags had the club been relegated. I was only there from October but the turnaround at the club has been remarkable.”
