Russell Anderson hopes Mark Reynolds’ long wait for a first Scotland cap comes to an end on Friday.
Reynolds has been a regular member of the national team squads since Gordon Strachan took the helm.
But the former Sheffield Wednesday and Motherwell man is yet to experience international football having been an unused substitute three times.
Anderson, the recently retired Aberdeen captain, won 11 Scotland caps during his career and would love to see Reynolds in action against Qatar at Easter Road on Friday.
He said: “It must be frustrating for him to go away with the squads and not have the cap to show for it.
“I am hoping if not this summer then at some point he gets the recognition he deserves. He has been in the squad for a while, so I think he deserves that cap.
“He has been dubbed ‘The Waterboy’ in the Aberdeen dressing-room – that is just how things work. There is no sympathy from the rest of the boys at all but I’m sure he wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Another Aberdeen defender, Ash Taylor, has spoken of his desire to play his way into the Scotland set-up.
Taylor was born in England and capped at under-21 level by Wales but also qualifies for Scotland through his grandfather.
Anderson sees no reason why Taylor cannot earn a call-up if he continues to produce the goods for the Dons next season.
He said: “That is an interesting one.
“It always takes time to settle into new surroundings but Ash has got used to playing in the team.
“He has moved away from home for the first time and he did really well this season. Ash is at an age, 24, where if he keeps improving, then why not?
“If Aberdeen continue to do well next season then there is more chance of the players getting international recognition.”
Dons midfielder Ryan Jack has been challenged by manager Derek McInnes to play his way into Strachan’s future plans.
Anderson believes former Scotland under-21 captain Jack is capable of making the step up to the senior team.
He added: “Ryan is 23, so he still has a long time ahead of him in his career.
“In the last two seasons he has really improved and become an established player in that midfield role. I don’t see any reason why he can’t kick on if he keeps improving.
“Iit is only a matter of time before he gets some sort of recognition at international level.”
