The world of football reacts to the news that Sepp Blatter has resigned from his role as president of Fifa.
Football Association chairman Greg Dyke has told the BBC Sepp Blatter’s resignation as FIFA president is “brilliant for world football”. Dyke, speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, said: “It is a good afternoon! I think it’s brilliant for world football. This is the start of something new.”
UEFA president Michel Platini, now one of the possible contenders, welcomed the announcement. Platini said: “It was a difficult decision, a brave decision, and the right decision”.
The “belated” resignation of Sepp Blatter as its president “is only the beginning of the process of change we need to see from FIFA”, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary John Whittingdale said.
Jamie Carragher is already saying he wants to get Sepp Blatter on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football next season. Blatter did once say he fancied being a pundit when he left FIFA… Of course, he has at least five more months in the day job before then given FIFA’s protocols.
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has responded on Twitter: “Blatter wasn’t sole responsible, more have to follow. Transparency and voting reform, then we move on and bring back ethics. #FIFA”
More to follow.
