Aberdeen supporters are used to riding a rollercoaster of emotion following the Dons but the events of the last 24 hours have been enough to test the durability of many a fan.
At 11pm last night it emerged a move for Ross County defender Paul Quinn had collapsed with the 29 year-old deciding there were aspects of his contract which he was unhappy with.
With his family settled in the Highlands he was considering signing a new deal to stay at Victoria Park in Dingwall and contacted Dons manager Derek McInnes to tell him the news.
Within hours of informing the club he had changed his mind about moving to Pittodrie the bookmakers slashed the odds on the Aberdeen manager leaving the club to take charge at Rangers.
With Rangers chairman Dave King missing the club’s EGM as he was in London on club business the debate on social media gathered pace with speculation linking McInnes with a move to Ibrox.
Odds on the Dons manager, who is due to return from holiday this weekend, have shortened with McInnes now rated as second favourite in the race for the vacant manager’s position.
Quinn’s decision not to move to Pittodrie only added fuel to the fire with many putting two and two together and coming up with five in believing the former Motherwell defender had somehow learned McInnes was moving on and had decided to call off his move to the Dons.
But there was a further twist to come.
McInnes, it transpires, is not going to Rangers and if that was not enough, he spent a couple of hours on the phone with Quinn ironing out the issues which had led to him stalling on a move to the club.
The Dons manager is clearly well versed in the art of salesmanship as he managed to reassure whatever doubts Quinn had and, having put the player’s mind at ease, had convinced the defender to get in a car and head for Pittodrie to sign for the club after all.
How’s that for a speedy resolution?
A day which began with members of the Red Army fearing the worst is ending with the manager stepping up his preparations for the new campaign by adding another new face to the squad.
We suspect pre-season training cannot come quickly enough for the manager and his squad next week. Perhaps the sight of everyone back in tow at Pittodrie will lay to rest the speculation of the silly season so that the Dons can get back to preparing for their Europa League qualifying campaign which gets underway on July 2.
