Aberdeen’s interest in Arbroath midfielder Mark Whatley appears to have cooled with the Pittodrie club deciding against inviting the 24-year-old in for a third trial period of training.
The former Raith Rovers and Spartans player was recruited by the Red Lichties last summer on a two-year deal by Paul Sheerin who left his post as Arbroath manager shortly afterwards to head to Pittodrie to become the club’s under-20 manager.
Meanwhile, Aberdeen goalkeeper Jamie Langfield has been linked with a move away from Pittodrie.
The 35-year-old, who will celebrate his testimonial for the club with a friendly against Brighton on Sunday, July 26, is third choice and has yet to make an appearance this season.
Danny Ward, the new on-loan signing from Liverpool, who will spend the season at Pittodrie, started the European tie with Scot Brown serving as understudy on the bench.
Championship side St Mirren have been linked with a move for the Paisley-born goalkeeper while Langfield’s former club Dunfermline are also keen.
