Reports today suggest that Southampton have opened the bidding for Celtic centre half Virgil van Dijk.
Throughout the summer the Dutchman has been strongly linked with a move to the English Premier League, with Everton and Sunderland said to be leading the chase, however, the Scottish Sun reports Southampton have now tabled an £8million bid for van Dijk.
Southampton have previously enjoyed doing business with the Parkhead club – signing Victor Wanyama for £12.5million from the Hoops in summer 2013. The Kenyan has impressed since switching Glasgow for the south coast of England and has recently been linked with a move to Arsenal.
Celtic are expected to try to hold out for more than the £8million currently on offer for van Dijk and are unlikely to sell their key man before Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Qarabag.
However, if Southampton get their way, the 24-year-old’s commanding performance in yesterday’s 2-0 victory against Ross County could have been his last Premiership appearance.
