As expected on the penultimate day of the transfer window things are going a little bit wild – Manchester United are splashing out a reported £36million on French teenager Anthony Martial and up here Celtic are being linked with a host of last minute signings.
Here we take a look at six of the players Celtic have been linked with today and how likely the players are to head to Parkhead.
1) Ryan Christie
Celtic and Caley Thistle have agreed a fee for the 20-year-old midfielder who is now in Glasgow discussing personal terms. The deal should be concluded by the close of play today but it remains to be seen if Caley Thistle will get their wish and the player will be allowed to return to the Highlands on loan.
Chance of happening: All but done.
2) Jozo Simunovic
Celtic have agreed a fee with Dinamo Zagreb for the transfer of Simunovic.
The 21-year-old is seen as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk who is expected to join Southampton tonight. Like Christie, personal terms are all that need to be sorted in order to finalise this deal.
Chance of happening: Very likely.
3) Steven Fletcher
Celtic previously admitted defeat in their attempts to sign Fletcher on a permanent deal, however, he has fallen out of favour at Sunderland, with manager Dick Advocaat preferring Danny Graham and Jermaine Defoe, while the Black Cats have agreed an £8million fee with Liverpool to sign Fabio Borini which would force Fletcher further down the pecking order.
The Hoops would still be unable to afford Fletcher’s wages but may be tempted by a loan deal with Sunderland contributing to the striker’s weekly pay packet.
Chance of happening: Possible.
4) Michu
Michu burst onto the English football scene in August 2012, netting four goals in his first three games before going on to score 22 goals that season. He was then linked with a move to a host of top clubs but stayed at Swansea and the following season he had scored six goals by October.
However, his career has taken a dive since then, he failed to find the net again that season before a rather underwhelming season on loan at Napoli last year. Swansea are desperate to get rid of the 29-year old and have said they may even pay him off and release him from his contract. Celtic are reportedly interested in taking him on board but a move back to his native Spain looks more likely than a trip to Scotland.
Chance of happening: Unlikely
5) Aiden McGeady
The Irishman born in Glasgow is a divisive figure to say the least. Breaking into the Celtic team as an 18-year-old, he quickly became a fans favourite before moving to Spartak Moscow and then Everton.
He has failed to register a Premier League appearance for the Toffees this season and is likely to slip further down the pecking order if Aaron Lennon returns to Goodison, as expected.
McGeady was reportedly spotted in Glasgow yesterday, sparking rumours he could be heading back to Celtic Park but with James Forrest, Gary Mackay-Steven, Stefan Johansen, Kris Commons, Scott Allan and Stuart Armstrong already on the books and McGeady earning almost twice what Celtic’s top earners are currently paid – a deal would look unlikely at best.
Chance of happening: Really quite slim
6) Andrej Kramarić
The Parkhead side had all but agreed a deal to sign the Croatian striker last summer but instead opted to sign Stefan Scepovic.
At the time Kramaric’s agent told the Daily Record: “Celtic left us standing outside in the rain. I will never deal with them again.”
Six months later Kramaric had scored 28 goals and earned a £10million move to Premier League Leicester City while Scepovic… Well… You know… Hasn’t exactly set the world alight at Parkhead.
Kramaric is yet to really get going in the English Premier League and could well move on loan but once again, his wages could prove a stumbling block. As could his agent who will “never deal with Celtic again”.
Chance of happening: Unlikely
