Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes believes central defender Ash Taylor is ready to make the step up to international football with either Scotland or Wales.
The 24-year-old, who was born in England, was capped at under-21 level by Wales but qualifies for Scotland through his grandfather.
Taylor has impressed in the heart of an Aberdeen defence which equalled a club record by winning its opening five matches in the Scottish Premiership.
McInnes bellieves the defender can receive international recognition during his time at Pittodrie and said: “Ash is only going to get better and I think he could handle international football.
“He was arguably our best player up until he got injured last year.
“We were definitely better with him in the team and we missed him when he was out.
“His performances since coming back have been of a high standard. He is a good size, happy with the ball at his feet and has good leadership qualities.
“He also has pace, aggression and chips in with goals – there isn’t much you would question.”
The Aberdeen manager also believes Graeme Shinnie and Ryan Jack can force their way into the thoughts of Scotland manager Gordon Strachan.
But, with the national team enjoying a renaissance under Strachan, McInnes cautioned his players may have to bide their time to get a chance.
He added: “I think all of our players just need to keep working away and be part of a successful Aberdeen team to get that extra bit of recognition.
“There will be loads of managers pushing for their players to get involved in the international scene.
“We have to be respectful of how good a job Gordon is doing with the current squad.
“I can totally understand there is not a real need to change that.
“There will be players in Gordon’s squad who have had to wait for their opportunity.
“But I believe I have players here who can play international football and hopefully that will be recognised in time.”
The SPFL confirmed yesterday Aberdeen’s third round League Cup tie against Hibernian at Easter Road will take place on Wednesday, September 23 at 7.45pm.
