Ross County: Martin Woods ready to stay for the long haul

Midfielder Martin Woods is ready to settle for the long haul with Ross County after returning to the Dingwall club last week.

Woods cut short a brief spell with English League 1 side Shrewsbury Town to return to the Staggies, for whom he made 28 appearances last season.

The 29-year-old initially left Victoria Park at the end of last campaign to move closer to his son, Jacob, who lived in England.

Despite starting all five games for the Shrews this season, Woods has had a change of heart and decided to move back to Scotland, this time taking his young son with him.

He says his successful spell at Dingwall last year, in which County staved off the threat of relegation with 10 wins from their last 14 matches, gave Jim McIntyre’s the edge over other top-flight sides who showed interest.

Woods, who signed a two-year contract with the option of another 12 months, said: “I had a discussion with the manager at Shrewsbury about a few personal things that were going on.

“He was really understanding and said that sometimes football comes second.

“He asked me if I wanted a couple of weeks off and I told him it was more of a long-term thing, so he said he couldn’t stand in my way.

“As soon as that happened, I said to my agent I wasn’t going to stay in England and he came back with a few options.

“It felt right coming back here. Everyone knows why I left in the first place – to be closer to my little boy – but he’s coming back with me this time, which is the icing on the cake.

“That was the only thing I missed last year, him not being here. That was a big carrot to get back down to England.

“There were a few Premiership clubs that made me offers. It took me two days and after speaking to the manager here, it just felt right coming back here.

“I love things being done right. I know that happens here, from the chairman to the manager. The standards here are high and that’s something I’m used to.”

Woods says he is already feeling back at home in the Staggies’ dressing-room, despite being one of 13 summer signings made by McIntyre.

Former Leeds United and Sunderland player Woods added: “It’s pretty easy to fit back in and I’ve only got a few new faces to meet. It’s been pretty easy. I know how the management want things done and it’s not like walking in feeling like it’s the first day of school.”
