Aberdeen FC: ‘Forget the record and focus on beating Celtic’

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has told his players to forget about being record breakers and focus on being Celtic beaters.

The Dons have equalled the feat of the Reds team of 1984-85 in winning their first five league matches and can set a new benchmark at Pittodrie if they beat champions Celtic on Saturday.

Victory would also take the Dons top of the table for the first time this season, two points ahead of Ronny Deila’s side with a game in hand.

The Hoops beat Aberdeen in all four league meetings between the sides last season and have failed to score in the last two matches against Celtic. Adam Rooney’s goal in a 2-1 Pittodrie defeat on November 9 last year was the last time the Dons breached the champions’ defence.

McInnes knows there can be no repeat of that statistic on Saturday and will be looking to his main attacker to deliver this weekend.

He said: “No one will really remember the records with this team, we want the team to be remembered for winning trophies, that’s your best gauge of success.

“It’s been a good start but we feel there is more to come. We managed to beat Celtic a couple of times the season before last but last season we didn’t and that doesn’t sit well with us.

“We have decent records against every other team in the league but Celtic were the one team we had problems getting results against.

“The performances against them were by and large not too bad but we haven’t managed to get winning performances against then.

“Saturday is all about the result more than the performance. We are looking for improvement.

“We are better equipped as a squad to deal with the challenges this season.

“I’ve said that the squad we have has been stronger in every season we’ve been here but nothing has changed from last season in that we are confident.

“Celtic are a good side and they will want to come up to Pittodrie and prove it. But we’ve got a lot of players playing with confidence, a squad playing with confidence and Pittodrie will be rocking. We are ready for the game.”

With Pittodrie heading for a sellout for the visit of the Premiership leaders McInnes knows expectations are high among supporters but insists no one at the club is getting carried away despite the impressive start to the new campaign.

He said: “I can understand excitement is mounting for the game as it’s a match between two teams who have started well in the league but it’s only a start.

“More is made of the game because it’s Celtic we’re facing but it is the same three points for a win as it is in any other game and we cannot lose sight of that.”
