We all agree that players appear to have too much power these days and referees do not get enough respect but it has proven a tough issue to tackle for the football authorities.
However, over the weekend one referee took matters into his own hands by pulling a gun on a player to quell a disagreement amongst players.
Brazilian side Brumadinho were taking on Amantes da Bola a regional league match in Brumadinho near Belo Horizonte, when a disagreement broke out on the pitch and Amantes da Bola players and substitutes and coaching staff invaded the pitch, demanding a Brumadinho player was sent off.
It was an ugly scene, difficult to deal with for any referee, however Gabriel Murta raced to the changing rooms, collected a gun and returned to the pitch, brandishing the weapon at the misbehaving players.
The referee’s desperate measures seemed to calm the players, however, he had to be restrained by one his linesmen and will now undergo a psychological assessment before facing suspension or a permanent ban.
