Ross County forward Liam Boyce says he is still pinching himself after being part of the squad that helped Northern Ireland qualify for the European Championships for the first time.
Michael O’Neill’s side reached next summer’s finals in France courtesy of last Thursday’s 3-1 win against Greece, before ensuring they finished top of their qualification group with a 1-1 draw with Finland on Sunday.
Boyce says he has been overwhelmed by messages of congratulations from friends, and the 24-year-old proud to have played his part in his country’s success.
Boyce said: “It’s only sinking in now, just what a big achievement it is – and the chance to play in the Euros.
“The first night, when we actually qualified, everyone was saying how proud they were. It is just brilliant, personally, to know everyone is looking out for me.
“There were people from school texting me saying well done, and that they could have imagined it happening back then.
“The last time Northern Ireland reached a major tournament was the World Cup in 1986. For such a small country, the manager has done brilliantly with the players we have.
“Just to be part of that squad, see what’s going on and how well we’ve been playing – and to finally get in the team – is great.”
Boyce came on as a substitute in the victory against the Greeks, and the former Cliftonville and Werder Bremen attacker hopes a continuation of his excellent club form, which has seen him score 11 goals for the Staggies already this season, can boost his chances of adding to his six international caps before the finals.
Boyce added: “I obviously want to keep scoring goals. I’m a forward and that’s what all forwards want to do.
“But just that added incentive keeps me motivated right to the end of the season, even if there’s nothing left to play for.
“I just have to keep doing what I’m doing for Ross County and hopefully I’ll be picked at the end of the season.
“I always want to do well for myself and my club, but international football is always at the back of my mind.
“I’ve been picked the last two trips, so hopefully that will continue.
“There are a couple of friendlies before the tournament so hopefully I can go away with the squad and show what I can do.”
