Dundee United will unveil Mixu Paatelainen as their new manager on Wednesday.
In an unexpected twist, the former Tangerines’ and Dons player re-emerged as a strong contender for the post yesterday, having first been spoken to around two weeks ago.
Detailed talks continued into tonight and a deal was agreed.
The possibility of Inverness manager John Hughes taking over from Jackie McNamara was still a live one yesterday, as it was understood Hughes was keen to speak to Tangerines’ chairman Stephen Thompson, despite Highland club’s public reluctance to let that happen.
But ex-Cowdenbeath, Hibs, Kilmarnock and Finland head coach Paatelainen was the chosen one at the end of a long and winding process, despite the fact he was reported to have withdrawn from the race to focus on securing a job in England.
Barring any overnight change of heart, he will today get to work with his new players ahead of Sunday’s Premiership trip to Tynecastle.
