Elgin City attacking midfielder Brian Cameron reckons increased competition for places will bring out the best in him.
Manager Jim Weir has strengthened his attacking options in recent weeks, capturing attacker Dylan Easton from St Johnstone and Connor McLaren on loan from the Perth side, while also adding Thomas Reilly from St Mirren along with Kyle Macleod on a temporary deal from Ross County.
Cameron goes into today’s League 2 encounter against Annan Athletic fresh from netting just his second goal of the season in Elgin’s 2-0 win against Arbroath last weekend.
The 24-year-old hopes the threat of losing his place can help him produce his best form, and he said: “I have never been prolific for goals in League 2, so it’s definitely something I look at.
“There was a bit of relief to get a goal at long last. I had not hit the net since the Stirling Albion game in the Petrofac Cup at the start of the season.
“The manager believes in me, and I know I’m capable of doing it.
“We cannot rely on Craig Gunn week-in, week-out, although he always delivers.
“Competition for places is always a good thing. The manager has brought in a lot of good attacking players in the last few weeks, and it can only benefit the team.
“It’s healthy competition. We all get on with each other, so there are no hard feelings. But it also means we are all looking over our shoulders. If we do not perform the manager has shown he’s not afraid to change things, or substitute somebody at half time.”
Elgin remain unbeaten at Borough Briggs this season, however that record will be put the test by today’s opponents, who are five points clear at the top of League 2.
Cameron reckons his side has nothing to fear at home however, and added: “We played Annan earlier in the season, and they were tough to break down.
“They have bullied a lot of teams – they scraped a result against East Fife last week with only 10 men so it will be a real test for us.
“We’ve had great home form so far this season. We are very confident and with the crowd behind us we reckon we can beat anyone on our day. Last week against Arbroath was the best we’ve played in a long time.”
