Derek McInnes: No more dress rehearsals for my Dons

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes will let his players decide whether he needs to strengthen the squad when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Dons players have shown signs of putting a poor run of form behind them by beating Ross County and reclaiming second spot in the Scottish Premiership from Hearts.

The transfer window opens on January 1 and the manager wants his players to convince him changes made will be kept to a minimum.

McInnes said: “It’s important we recognise that we have a good squad which I believe in.

“I wouldn’t expect huge changes in January but there might be a chance to do something before the window closes at the end of that month.

“There are a lot of factors – form, injuries and the fact January is not always the best time to be able to get what we want.”

The Dons have five games in a busy December, starting with today’s trip to Dens Park to face Dundee.

Aberdeen beat Paul Hartley’s side at Pittodrie earlier in the season but McInnes has been impressed by the Dark Blues.

Former Don Nicky Low is likely to feature against Aberdeen but McInnes believes Hartley has several players who can cause his team problems if given the opportunity.

He said: “I watched them at Tynecastle and McDiarmid Park and they were well worth their point after more than holding their own at both places.

“They scored good goals in both matches. Rory Loy’s against Hearts was excellent and Kane Hemmings’ one at Perth was even better. They have got some good footballers but, after how well they did last year, everyone is looking for a bit more.

“They are probably about where they were this time last season and they certainly haven’t lost many matches so far.

“There is a thin line between wins and draws and I’m sure Paul feels he’s getting closer to picking up more three points in games.

“They are usually tight but exciting games down at Dens since I’ve been at Aberdeen and I don’t think this one will be any different.”
