Aberdeen attacker Adam Rooney is targeting more goals after he kept up his fine run of form in his side’s 2-0 win at Dundee on Saturday.
The victory, built on Aberdeen’s first clean sheet at Dens Park since May 2000, took the Dons to within four points of leaders Celtic and four points clear of third-placed Hearts, who visit Pittodrie on Saturday.
Rooney, who scored the second goal in the win, is in a rich vein of form and expects to be adding to his tally following Aberdeen’s improving form in recent weeks.
He said: “I’ve got 11 now and have scored five in the last six games so I feel confident. We are creating a lot of chances at the moment which is what I thrive on so hopefully there are a few more to come.
“We didn’t have a great time last month but we are playing our way into form and hopefully we can now build on that in the weeks ahead.
“We’re looking to get as many points on the board as we can and if we can improve on last year’s total it will have been a very good season.”
The Dons were hugely impressive in the first half at Dens Park on Saturday as they continued where they left off in their previous match against Ross County.
Rooney believes the high-tempo display, coupled with his team-mates’ desire to take the game to Dundee, brings out the best in his side.
He said: “With the chances we created before the interval our lead could have been more, but it was a good performance.
“Starting at the back we pushed right up the park and ensured we won the high balls. From there we made sure we won the second balls and that allowed us to push forward and create chances.
“We didn’t start last week’s game well at all but our second half was good and we were pleased to carry that on here.”
The win sets up an important game at Pittodrie on Saturday when third-placed Hearts are the opposition. Victory for the Dons will put them seven points clear of the Jambos but Rooney played down the importance of the game when he said: “Hearts is just another game for us and we don’t look at it as anything more than another three points.”
Niall McGinn, who scored the opening goal on Saturday, was withdrawn at half-time with a tight groin but manager Derek McInnes expects the Northern Ireland international to be fit for Saturday.
