Scottish clubs are vulnerable to the money available in England during the January transfer window. Here, we look at some of the SPFL players who could be targeted.
Niall McGinn (Aberdeen)
The wide man has netted eight goals this season and is comfortably top of the Scottish Premiership assists chart with 11. Having helped Northern Ireland reach Euro 2016, his stock has possibly never been higher. But at 28 and with 18 months left on his contract, Aberdeen are unlikely to be tempted to sell given what they have at stake this season.
Anthony Stokes (Celtic)
Recently suspended for two weeks by his club after complaints about being omitted from the squad and, with only two appearances this season, the 27-year-old Republic of Ireland forward is clearly surplus to requirements at Parkhead.
Sam Nicholson (Hearts)
With fellow wide midfielder Jamie Walker struggling with a knee injury, Nicholson has been the key young Scot at Tynecastle this season. The 20-year-old has shown he can cope with the physical demands of the Premiership and continued to impress with his creativity.
Jason Cummings (Hibernian)
The 20-year-old attacker has taken his game to a new level this season, hitting 15 goals in 23 games for his club. Possesses a lethal left foot, skill and pace, and his composure was evident when he dinked a fabulous finish against Rangers at Ibrox.
Michael O’Halloran (St Johnstone)
O’Halloran has netted five goals and set up nine more this season, with his pace, close control and composure with his final ball putting him in real contention for a Scotland call-up. At 24, the former Bolton trainee is at a good age to return to England but St Johnstone are under no pressure to sell.
Greg Stewart (Dundee)
The versatile attacking player made a huge impact in his first season in full-time football, making the PFA Scotland player-of-the-year shortlist after his move from Cowdenbeath to Dens Park. With six goals from wide midfield this season and 18 months left on his contract, Dundee could be tempted by some decent money for the 25-year-old in January.
Greg Kiltie (Kilmarnock)
The 18-year-old is out of contract in January and has resisted attempts to extend his deal at Rugby Park. The winger has been one of the bright sparks of a season of ups and spectacular downs for Killie, showing skill and an end product.
John Souttar (Dundee United)
The 19-year-old has so far declined to accept a contract extension offer and Dundee United could cash in rather than lose him for compensation cash in the summer. The teenager, who has played right back, centre back and midfield in more than 70 appearances, has been linked with Celtic and Rangers and United could use some transfer income to bring in players who can help them fight relegation.
Ali Crawford (Hamilton)
The 24-year-old attacking midfielder was on fire at the start of the season but Hamilton’s form has dipped. His energy, shooting ability and skill make him a potential target but many English Championship clubs might prefer more physical players.
Craig Sibbald (Falkirk)
The 20-year-old midfielder has already made more than 150 appearances since making his debut aged 16. The skilful, lively player has an eye for goal and has helped the Bairns mount an unlikely title challenge in the Championship.
