Aberdeen’s miserable weekend went from bad to worse tonight as Liverpool recalled goalkeeper Danny Ward from his loan at Pittodrie.
The 22-year-old has been an impressive ever-present for Aberdeen this season, making 29 appearances for the club, but it appears yesterday’s Scottish Cup loss at Hearts was his final game for the Dons.
Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is struggling to be fit for the Premier League game against Arsenal at Anfield on Wednesday, while back-up goalkeeper Adam Bogdan has failed to impress and was culpable for one of League 2 club Exeter’s goals in the 2-2 draw in the FA Cup.
Former Bolton goalkeeper Bogdan conceded a goal direct from a corner in the cup tie, prompting Reds manager Jurgen Klopp to recall Ward to Anfield and the Wales Under-21 international goalkeeper could start in goal for his parent club against the Gunners.
Dons manager Derek McInnes had spoken of his desire to keep Ward for the season last month but Klopp has been impressed by the goalkeeper’s performances and is ready to give him his chance.
McInnes agreed to extend Danny Rogers’ loan at Championship side Falkirk until the end of the season last week but, with Ward’s departure, Rogers could be recalled from the Bairns for Sunday’s Premiership match at Ross County.
