Derek McInnes will be getting a “managers’ dream” if Aberdeen are successful in their bid to sign Don Cowie on loan.
The Dons want to bring the 32-year-old former Caley Thistle and Ross County midfielder back to Scottish football after seven years in England, during which Cowie has played for Cardiff City, Watford and now Wigan Athletic.
Aberdeen are still in with a chance of the Premiership title but have been hit by hamstring injuries to captain Ryan Jack and Willo Flood, with both midfielders expected to be out for four to six weeks.
Cowie’s former Caley Jags team-mate Barry Wilson believes the player would be a perfect fit at Pittodrie.
Wilson said: “He is the fittest player I’ve played with and he would work up and down the pitch all day long. He is a managers’ dream. He keeps the ball and does the simple things well, which is why he has been so valued by his team-mates in the clubs he has played for.
“He is a player with great quality. You don’t play for seven years in England at Premier League and Championship level without being a good player and he won a couple of caps for Scotland as well at his peak. We used to car-share at training at Caley Thistle before he moved to Inverness as he lived at Strathpeffer and I’m at Dingwall. He’s a great lad.”
Cowie has adapted his game in his time in England, switching from the dynamic box-to-box player who played in the Highlands to a more disciplined defensive role in England.
But Wilson believes Cowie will have no problem adapting.
He added: “Craig Brewster brought him to Inverness as my replacement on the right side but it was when Don moved to central midfield he really found his feet.”
