Ross County goalkeeper Scott Fox is determined to help the Staggies improve their away form, starting in tomorrow’s Premiership trip to Motherwell.
County’s home form has been excellent this season, with Jim McIntyre’s side winning 10 of their 15 matches at Victoria Park. Although they have played two less away games, the Highlanders have only won three times on the road this term.
Although not disheartened by the Staggies’ lack of victories away from Dingwall, Fox wants to help ease the pressure on County’s attackers by preventing goals at the other end.
He said: “I think it is just down to the kind of league we’re in. Each team, at the start of the season, sets out to win home games and anything they can take on the road is almost a bonus.
“People don’t like coming up here. Our home record speaks for itself. Most teams are the same in this league.
“Away from home, we like to attack as well – we’ve been involved in a couple of threes and scored four down at Kilmarnock. We score goals. It is just about keeping them out now and getting the points on the board.
“We’re not so worried about keeping clean sheets because we know if they score, we’ll score again. But as a goalkeeper I want to keep clean sheets, make saves, and win games. I’d be happy to win games 1-0, but if the forwards want to go and score five I’ll take that as well. It’s important we get back to basics on the defensive side and let the forwards do what they do.”
Motherwell are aiming to bounce back from a 6-0 thrashing by Hearts last weekend, but will move to within two points of the Staggies with a victory at Fir Park, and Fox added: “It will be night and day, I’m sure, in terms of their performance. I don’t think we can read too much into it. Performances before that have been really good for Motherwell. The manager will set out a gameplan though and we’ll, hopefully, go out and do the job.”
Despite County’s 3-2 loss against Aberdeen last weekend, Fox takes heart from the fact his side is still competing strongly on all three fronts, with a League Cup semi-final against Celtic at Hampden Park to look forward to next Sunday. The 28-year-old said: “We’re fifth just now and still in two cups, with a semi-final to look forward to – we’d have bitten your hand off for that if we’d been offered that at the start of the season.
“But when we lose games you are a wee bit upset, with the standards we’ve set. In some ways we’re a victim of our own success.”
