Aberdeen target Don Cowie has had his contract terminated by Wigan Athletic.
The Dons want to bring the 32-year-old former Caley Thistle and Ross County midfielder back to Scottish football after seven years in England, during which Cowie has played for Cardiff City, Watford and now Wigan Athletic.
Aberdeen are still in with a chance of the Premiership title but have been hit by hamstring injuries to captain Ryan Jack and Willo Flood, with both midfielders expected to be out for four to six weeks.
This afternoon the Latics confirmed that the Scotland international midfielder has had his contract terminated by mutual consent and has now left the club.
Latics manager Gary Caldwell told the club’s official website: “Don is a player I have a massive amount of respect for, I have known him a long time as a team mate for Scotland and here at Wigan and now this season as his manager.
“He is a fantastic professional and has never given less than 100% every time he puts on a match kit or a training top. The reality, however, is that he has not been getting as much football as he would have wished at this stage of his career and when the opportunity came up, he was happy with the situation and will now be able to explore what options he has.
“We wish him well, we hope he finds a club quickly because I have no doubt he has a lot to offer still.”
