Aberdeen have signed Norwich City midfielder James Maddison on loan until January.

Manager Derek McInnes was keen to strengthen his midfield after captain Ryan Jack was ruled out for the foreseeable future due to a knee operation and made his move on deadline day.

The Canaries paid Coventry City £2.5million to secure the services of 19-year-old Maddison, who was linked with Arsenal and Spurs, on February 1 before allowing him to spend the second half of last season with the Sky Blues.

He has played for Alex Neil’s side in the EFL Cup but has yet to make his Championship debut for the club.

Two weeks ago, Norwich manager Neil claimed he would not send Maddison – who was also scouted by Celtic last season – out on loan but Dons manager McInnes has managed to persuade the former Hamilton manager Maddison can gain first team experience at Pittodrie.

The news was greeted with anger on social media last night by Norwich supporters, who had hoped to see the highly-rated teenager in action for their first team this season.

Maddison will join the Dons for training on Monday along with midfielder Jonny Hayes, who remains at Pittodrie despite being linked with a move to England.

McInnes’ former club Bristol City were reportedly keen on taking the 29-year-old to the Championship, but the speculation came to nothing.

Former Aberdeen and Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew, meanwhile, has signed for Championship strugglers Blackburn Rovers on a three-year contract.

Another former Don, Jack Grimmer, joined Shrewsbury Town on loan for the season from Fulham.

Dons defender Callum Morris has received his first call-up to the Northern Ireland squad for their World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic.

The 26-year-old, who has yet to play a competitive game for the club, was called up after Tom Flanagan withdrew because of a thigh injury.

The Dons’ next league opponents, Caley Thistle, made two signings yesterday with free agent defender Brad McKay joining the club on a two-year deal while midfielder Lornell Cole has joined Caley jags on loan from Fulham until January.

Ross County did not sign any new players on deadline day but defender Chris Robertson left the club after cancelling his contract while fellow defender Scott Boyd has joined Kilmarnock on a season-long loan.
