Aberdeen will have to wait until 2017 for another chance to end their wait for a win at Ibrox following a 2-1 defeat to Rangers.
The Dons, chasing their first win at Ibrox since 1991, were left to rue a crucial missed chance early in the second half from Jayden Stockley as Kenny Miller and Lee Hodson scored to give the home side victory.
Dons manager Derek McInnes made two changes to the side which lost the Betfred Cup final with Jayden Stockley replacing Adame Rooney in attack while Mark Reynolds replaced Anthony O’Connor in central defence.
Rangers defender James Tavernier, who was culpable for both goals his side lost in the midweek defeat at Hearts, dropped to the bench with Jason Holt taking his place in the side.
Following a keenly contested opening it was the Dons who threatened first through Jayden Stockley but his shot was palmed away by Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham.
The home side responded by creating their first clear sight of goal with Barrie McKay sending captain Lee Wallace clear on goal but the left back dragged his shot wide.
Stockley should have put his side ahead at the start of the second half when Jonny Hayes found him in space six yards out but the Dons forward headed wide.
It was a gilt-edged chance for Aberdeen and they were left to rue the missed opportunity when a quick free kick from Rangers ended with McKay flicking the ball on to Kenny Miller who beat Lewis with a low drive.
Aberdeen’s afternoon went from bad to worse as the home side doubled their lead with 19 minutes remaining through defender Lee Hodson who finished a fine move by firing the ball high past Lewis.
In a frantic finale Rangers defender Clint Hill was dismissed in injury time for a second bookable offence and he was joined minutes later by Dons captain Ryan Jack following a pushing match with Rangers substitute Martyn Waghorn. The Gers man was booked while Jack, who had already been booked, was sent down the tunnel.
Andy Considine headed a consolation for the Dons in the sixth minute of injury time but it was too little, too late for the Dons.
