Aberdeen’s winning home run was brought to an unceremonious by a clinical Rangers at Pittodrie.
The Dons dominated the second half but two late goals from Kenny Miller and a Joe Dodoo strike secured a 3-0 win for Pedro Caixinha’s side.
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes named the same starting 11 which beat Caley Thistle 1-0 on Tuesday while attacker Jayden Stockley was named among the substitutes following his return from a two-match ban.
Gers manager Pedro Caixinha made two changes to the team which drew 0-0 at Kilmarnock on Wednesday. Veteran forward Kenny Miller and midfielder Jon Toral returned to the line-up with Barrie McKay and Andy Halliday dropping to the bench.
The game was competitive from the first minute and Dons captain Ryan Jack and Rangers forward Joe Garner were booked after squaring up on the halfway line.
The Dons were the first to threaten with Jonny Hayes beating David Bates down the left before seeing his low drive turned round the post by Gers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham.
Rangers responded with a shot from Martyn Waghorn which deflected into the path of Garner but the forward saw his shot blocked by Dons goalkeeper Joe Lewis.
The early chances offered hope this would be an entertaining end to end encounter but the match disintegrated into a dour midfield contest with neither side managing to impose themselves as they would have liked.
The pattern changed in the second half, however, as the Dons piled the pressure on the visitors.
Gers goalkeeper Foderingham made three saves inside the opening 15 minutes of the second period to keep the game goalless. He blocked a McLean volley and two efforts from Adam Rooney, the second of which was a fine one handed block low to his right.
His saves proved crucial as Rangers broke away to open the scoring 11 minutes from time through Kenny Miller, the forward firing a superb shot past Lewis after the Dons goalkeeper had saved Waghorn’s shot.
Incredibly the Dons lost another two goals in a mad spell with Miller running clear on goal to make it 2-0 before substitute Joe Dodoo fired home a third for the Gers with seven minutes remaining.
