Former Aberdeen goalkeeper Danny Ward was the hero of the hour as his penalty save helped Huddersfield Town win promotion to the Premier League for the first time yesterday.
Following a goalless draw in the play-off final, the match was settled by spot kicks and Ward, who is on loan from Liverpool, saved Jordan Obita’s penalty before Christopher Schindler scored the winning penalty to win promotion for David Wagner’s side, who had been among the relegation favourites among bookmakers at the start of the season.
“It hasn’t sunk in. I tried to read a way and get a hand on it, and thankfully I saved one. It’s unbelievable.
“It’s fully deserved. There is a special group of people here and the work that goes on behind the scenes is unbelievable.
“The manager has played a huge part with the people he brought in during the summer. Everyone who has come in has clicked straight away.”
