Celtic stretch unbeaten run to 61 games with comfortable victory over Aberdeen

Moussa Dembele: At the double for the Hoops.
Moussa Dembele: At the double for the Hoops.

Aberdeen were unable to halt Celtic’s unbeaten domestic run as Derek McInnes’ side went down 3-0 at Pittodrie.

In front of a sell-out crowd of 20,528, Kieran Tierney’s second goal of the season put the Hoops into a 13th minute lead with Moussa Dembele doubling the advantage seven minutes before the interval.

Frenchman Dembele was on target again in the 63rd minute as Brendan Rodgers’ team coasted to victory.

The result leaves the Dons three points behind the league leaders, who are now unbeaten in 61 domestic matches.

The Dons made only one change from the team that defeated Hibernian 1-0 at Easter Road 11 days ago with Andrew Considine returning from a fractured wrist in place of Ryan Christie, who was ineligible to face his parent club.

Celtic made three alterations from the side that earned a place in next month’s Betfred Cup final with a 4-2 success against Hibs with Moussa Dembele, Tom Rogic and James Forrest stepping in for Patrick Roberts, Scott Sinclair and Leigh Griffiths.

Aberdeen made a bright start with captain Graeme Shinnie testing Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon with a powerful drive from distance.

But it was Celtic who took the lead after 13th minute with their first attack.

Dembele’s cross looked to have evaded everyone but left back Tierney arrived at the back post to lash home from an acute angle with the aid of the crossbar.

Rogic went close on two occasions before Celtic doubled their advantage seven minutes.

Tierney, the scorer of the game’s first goal, produced the assist for the second with a superb cross into the area that was prodded home by Dembele.

The pressure continued after the break with Lewis called into action to thwart Stuart Armstrong and Dembele.

Aberdeen were fortunate to avoid going three down after 57 minutes when Mikael Lustig picked out Rogic but the Australian sliced wide before a combination of Kari Arnason and Considine cleared a close-range Dembele attempt off the line.

The Dons, looking increasingly stretched, replaced Adam Rooney with Scott Wright just before the hour mark as they attempted to stem the tide.

But it was only a matter of time before Celtic increased their tally with the third goal coming in the 63rd minute.

A deep Armstrong free kick was nodded back across goal by Dedryck Boyata for Dembele to head home.
