Graeme Shinnie: Now bring on the Hoops

Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie is back in the squad after suspension.

Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie has urged his side to make amends for its most recent display against Celtic by piling more misery on the Hoops at Parkhead on Saturday.

The Dons made it three wins in a row with a 4-1 demolition of Hibernian at Pittodrie at the weekend. Shinnie scored the opening goal before team-mate Gary Mackay-Steven netted a hat-trick to set up the Dons for a crucial game at Celtic Park.

Celtic’s phenomenal unbeaten domestic run, which had stretched to 69 games, came to an end yesterday when they lost 4-0 at Hearts and Shinnie hopes the Dons can inflict another defeat on the leaders this weekend.

The 3-0 home defeat by the Hoops on October 25 still irks the Dons skipper and he is determined to show the real Aberdeen in Glasgow.

He said: “We’ll go to Parkhead with confidence. It’s never an easy one to go to but we’re relishing it.

“Our performance here against Celtic wasn’t great and we gave them too much of the ball. We want to change that at Parkhead.

“They’ve shown they are the best team in the country and their form has been brilliant. We know it will be at tough game but we will be looking forward to it.

“We didn’t set out to send out any messages against Hibs, we wanted to build on our two away wins by picking up a bit of steam. We’re in the right place mentally for what will be a huge game.

“Celtic can be beaten. We didn’t do that here but teams have shown it can be done and we feel we have the squad that can do it. We want to go to their place and stamp our authority on the game and, hopefully, win.”

Mackay-Steven became the fourth Dons player to score a treble in 2017 following Andy Considine, Adam Rooney and Scott Wright with his hat-trick ensuring it was the first time four Aberdeen players have managed the feat since 1958.

Shinnie was full of praise for Mackay-Steven and hopes the three goals bolsters his confidence following a sluggish start.

He said: “We know Gary has it in him but the challenge is to get it out of him consistently. He has great feet, his trickery is brilliant.

“He’s had a slow start but we know what he is capable of and his confidence will be sky high now.

“It was probably our best performance of the season. We got on top of Hibs and didn’t let them settle. When you do that you get your rewards.”
