Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes reckons Sam Cosgrove’s goalscoring form will have clubs in England casting their eye over the Aberdeen striker.
Cosgrove has 17 goals this season and Championship club Rotherham reportedly considered making a bid for him during the January transfer window.
The Englishman is under contract with the Dons until 2022, after penning an extension last month on the back of his December player of the month award.
McInnes has had faith in him for the club’s biggest games of the season and is now seeing that repaid with Cosgrove’s goal return.
He said: “I know a lot of clubs down south are aware Sam is doing well. You would do at the rate Sam is scoring goals. I am sure there will be a lot of teams having a look but for us there were no offers and no concrete talks in January.
“He is certainly playing with a confidence but there are certain aspects of his game he still needs to tighten up on. There is an understanding from me that we are not going to get perfect performances from somebody who hasn’t had all that much experience. He is learning on the job.
“He is doing fantastically well and if he keeps working on his skills and his trade, with the added ingredients of confidence, then all these things can assist him to become even better. He is 6ft4, can run, look after the ball and is scoring goals. He has a lot going for him and that is why we signed him.”
Defender Mikey Devlin returned to the team against St Mirren on Saturday for the first time since November following a foot problem and the Dons manager hopes they will reap the benefits of being patient with the former Hamilton man.
McInnes added: “It has taken longer than we hoped but we were mindful that we didn’t want him breaking down again. He has put together a good amount of training over the last couple of weeks and it is good to have him back.”
