Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes feels he has, at last, decisions to make with his defensive options.
The return of Ash Taylor from a long-term hamstring injury and Scott McKenna, Shay Logan and Mikey Devlin overcoming various niggles means McInnes can finally choose from his best available pool.
Devlin has been the one to find himself out of the side of late, starting the last four games on the bench.
The former Hamilton Accies centre-back made his Scotland debut in October against Russia but has not represented his club since a 1-1 draw with St Johnstone.
McInnes played Andy Considine alongside McKenna for a spell and then threw Taylor back into the fray – after four months out – against Rangers a fortnight ago.
McInnes said: “For the first time in a long time we’ve had options.
“It wasn’t too long ago we were decimated by injuries and players were playing out of position in the back line.
“The trade-off of that is when we do have everyone available, I’ve got decisions to make.
“At any top club, you need that competition in areas of the pitch. “Sometimes you pick a certain player from what you see in training and in their performances, another time it’s another player.”
McInnes has often spoken about the need for others in red to step up and help Sam Cosgrove, rather than relying on the striker to carry the goalscoring burden on his own.
No other Dons player has more than four goals this season – Considine, Niall McGinn and Ryan Hedges – with Cosgrove surging ahead on 18.
James Wilson, a summer arrival from Manchester United, has returned to the team in recent matches but has yet to find the net in 13 games.
McInnes said: “Without singling anyone out, I’m wanting a bit more from everyone in that attacking area.
“I don’t want that responsibility just to land on Sam Cosgrove.
“We don’t want players to waste their opportunities. In James’ case, he’s certainly got the ability to be a key player for us.
“Sam had three or four good chances last week at Easter Road and normally he would take one or two of those.
“But if he’s not scoring then it’s up to others to take the responsibility to get the goals needed to win the game.”
