Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has urged Uefa to make their minds up on what to do with the football calendar in Europe.
European football’s governing body has not backed down on demands for top flight campaigns to be concluded this summer but the timetable of July looks increasingly unlikely following Scottish Government advice from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon earlier this week.
The First Minister also raised doubts as to the risk factor involved in matches being played even if they are behind closed doors.
The advice seems to clash with Uefa’s desire to resume in July and Cormack has repeated his call for clarity ahead of the meeting of Uefa’s executive committee today.
He said: “I think the reality is Uefa need to make a decision at some stage. It might be that Spain and Italy come out of this cycle earlier than everybody else.
“For anybody to think, realistically, in front of crowds in July, I mean, I certainly don’t believe that is the case. I wouldn’t want to build my business plan on us playing in July.
“Uefa need to say ‘look, let’s put all these vested interests aside’. It’s difficult though because when there’s hundreds of millions of compensation maybe being asked for, that’s uppermost in their minds.
“You guys know as much as I know, which is in the space of 24 hours, you’ve got conflicting opinions coming from senior executives at Uefa. At the end of the day, whether it’s Uefa with their Champions League broadcasting income, or whether it’s the big five leagues, this is all about what compensation might take place if all these games are not played.”
The Belgian league is due to officially end tomorrow but it seems the chances of the SPFL being able to follow suit and declare Celtic champions of the Premiership are slim.
Cormack has sympathy with the plight SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster and his colleagues are facing.
He said: “I feel sorry for Neil and the board as we have to take guidance from Uefa and one minute your being told you can make the call then the next minute they tell you that you can’t.
“Being a smaller league as well because the big five leagues is where all the action is about what is going to happen.
“The players need a month to get fit and we have to decide about finishing this season.
“You’ve got the Euros pushed to 2021 so it is a problem how you finish this season before the next one, or maybe you shorten the next one.”
