Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has warned Scottish clubs are facing football Armageddon if they do not play again in 2020.
Uefa yesterday confirmed member associations can declare the season over provided European places are decided on sporting merit.
The governing body for European football has recognised some associations may have legitimate reasons to call an early end to the season such as economic issues or government declarations that sporting events cannot take place.
The SPFL is awaiting confirmation from Uefa that Scotland meets the criteria to end the Scottish Premiership while a taskforce led by Ann Budge of Hearts and Les Gray of Hamilton Accies debates the possibility of league reconstruction for next season.
However, Cormack has written to Premiership clubs urging a feasibility study be carried out before any decision on ending the season is made and insists survival should be club’s priority.
The Dons chairman said: “If we are not playing football, whether it’s behind closed doors but on television so we generate income or with fans in stadiums, it’s going to be very, very difficult for almost every Scottish club to survive through to the end of this year.
“That’s just a simple fact.
“Our number one priority right now is how do we get back to playing football safely to avoid this financial Armageddon.
“We have to focus on surviving, that’s the number one thing.”
The Aberdeen chairman is concerned clubs have taken their eye off the ball in switching focus to league reconstruction and fears valuable time could be lost if change is put above survival of clubs.
He said: “If we spend the next two months fighting through reorganising the whole league we are focusing on the wrong thing. For me, this is almost like we are trying to reorganise the deckchairs on the Titanic while it’s going down.
“While we are focusing on that we are not focusing on what matters right now, like the other leagues are doing in other countries working with government and health authorities to get back to football as quickly and safely as we can.”
If the SPFL gets the go-ahead to end the season Celtic will be declared champions, Rangers and Motherwell will quality for the Europa League and Hearts will be relegated.
Whether Aberdeen, who were fourth when play was stopped, will gain the final Europa League berth depend on whether the Scottish Cup can be concluded.
Cormack has welcomed Uefa’s clarification.
He said: “We welcome Uefa’s statement which is aligned to our approach. That is, first and foremost, to explore every option open to us for completing the current season in a way that is safe and feasible and in line with Government restrictions.
“If that is not possible, we need to ensure that we are prepared and have answers to how Scottish football is going to survive and the best way to move forward.”
