Representing the family name is a tough task for Lewis Ferguson but the Aberdeen midfielder insists he is not feeling the pressure of trying to enhance the family dynasty.
His uncle Barry enjoyed a glittering career winning multiple trophies with Rangers and captaining both his club and country while his father Derek also boasts two league winners’ medals and three League Cup winners’ medals from his time at Ibrox.
The wait for elusive first medal continues for Ferguson junior but the Double Tree by Hilton Scottish Football Writers Young Player of the Year knows at 20 he has time on his hands.
He said: “In other people’s eyes there will be pressure because of the name but it is my own career.
“I wouldn’t say it doesn’t have anything to do with my family because they are there to help me but it is my own career and it is myself who is making the decisions and I don’t feel any added pressure.
“I can see why people think that but I put pressure on myself to go and achieve things and the pressure is coming from me to go and perform.”
Ferguson insists, far from being intimidated by the success of his dad and uncle he is inspired to try to emulate their past glories.
He said: “When you see the medals, it makes you that wee bit more determined to go and do it yourself and experience that feeling of winning something.
“The goal of winning a trophy hasn’t changed. You see the medals and stuff and it’s something I want to experience myself. I’m pretty sure it’s something the rest of the boys in the squad want to experience as well.”
Lewis’ father Derek enjoyed a long career but he hardly boasts what you would call a stellar goals return, scoring just 16 league goals in 475 matches in his career.
With 11 goals to his name already 20 year-old Lewis is confident he can better his dad’s goal record.
He said: “I always give him stick about that. I don’t know how many he scored in his career but I’m trying to beat that as well if possible. I think it was about 16 or so I’m going to try to beat that as quick as I can.
“I was trying to catch my dad in terms of goals. I searched it up and I told him I was coming for him and he turned round and told me he had a league and a League Cup winners’ medal by my age.
“He put me right in my place but I would also love to go and get trophies as well.”
