Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes hopes the chance to return home will spur Ronald Hernandez on in his attempts to establish himself at Pittodrie.
The Venezuelan international has struggled for game time since moving to the Dons from Norwegian club Stabaek in January.
Despite has lack of minutes for his club Hernandez, who turned 23 on Sunday, has been selected for his country’s World Cup qualifiers against Colombia on Saturday and Paraguay on Tuesday.
Hernandez has been isolated from his family, who reside in Venezuela, and McInnes hopes the chance to return home even for a few days can give Hernandez renewed impetus when he returns to the club next week.
The Dons boss said: “Ronny is in the squad for games against Colombia and Paraguay. We have to hope he has that dispensation which we have for travelling here when he gets there but I’m not sure how that will help Ronny given he hasn’t seen his wife and family for nine months.
“He’ll be wanting to jump ship as soon as he gets there. The boys have been winding him up but I think he is glad to be closer to his family and get the chance to play for his country in two very important games.
“Hopefully Ronny can get a wee boost by getting involved but whether he gets to see his family I don’t know.
“Hopefully that will be the case but we’ll make sure he is well looked after when he comes back to us before we go to Tannadice.”
The Dons paid a substantial fee of around £800,000 for the right back and view the international as a long-term project after signing him on a four-year deal.
McInnes has urged Hernandez to continue to work hard and try to force his way into the side when he returns but the Dons boss may consider a loan move for the player so he can gain more game time when the window reopens on January 1.
He said: “The plan for Ronny, like everybody else not playing week in, week out, is to dig deep and work hard to get in the team.
“Once we get closer to the January window we could maybe make these sort of assessments and decisions on boys who are not playing regularly but between now and January we expect them to play their part.
“It will be for myself and the players to decide on what is best for each player.
“What we’re finding at the minute is a need for younger players to go out on loan to clubs. Due to the financial situation it is clearly for everybody.
“It has never been about finance for us in terms of putting youngsters out to lower league teams; it has been about development.
“But because of the development league being up in the air and some teams unable to commit to it we’re concerned about a group of six or seven who need game time.”
