He has had the shortest break of any Aberdeen player but attacker Niall McGinn insists he is ready for action as the Dons await their European fate.
The Dons are in the draw for the first and second qualifying rounds of the Europa League which will be made in Nyon, Switzerland, today.
McGinn only returned to training on Thursday following a busy summer of international duty with Northern Ireland in South America but he showed he is not lacking in fitness after scoring the equaliser for Aberdeen in their 2-2 draw against St Patrick’s Athletic in Dublin on Saturday.
He said: “I’ve done a lot of miles this summer, so somewhere close would be nice. I’ve played in Uruguay and Chile and they were experiences I will remember for the rest of my life.
“I had two weeks off before going to South America and was in Portugal for a few days before coming here, so I’m ticking over nicely.
“I’ve just renewed my passport but on the old one I’ve tracked up a few miles and have the stamps to prove it.”
The former Celtic forward has European experience from his time with the Hoops but he is relishing his first campaign as an Aberdeen player.
He said: “European games are great occasions. I came here to play in cup competitions, do well in the league and be back in Europe again and, thankfully, we’ve done that. Now I want to play at this level and thrive in it.
“We’ll take each game as it comes. Celtic took it one game at a time and reached the final, so anything can happen and if we were to make the group stages it would be fantastic.
“No matter who we get it’s not going to be easy. It will probably be a team like the one we’ve played against St Patrick’s. It was not an easy game by any means, so we know we are going to have to play well.”
McGinn was pleased to get off the mark for the new campaign at the first attempt on Saturday as the Dons recovered from the loss of two goals in the opening 17 minutes to earn a draw. Adam Rooney had reduced the deficit before McGinn’s equaliser.
He said: “St Pats are in the middle of their season and they gave us a good game. I was just happy to get some more minutes under my belt and I feel ready to go again.”
