Former Dundee United attacker David Goodwillie is set to sign for Aberdeen and he could join the Pittodrie squad as soon as today.
Goodwillie, 25, is a free agent after English Championship club Blackburn Rovers terminated his contract early.
The player, capped three times by Scotland, had been training with St Johnstone but the Scottish Cup winners are unlikely to be able to afford the attacker, who returned to Tannadice on loan last season after his £2million move to Ewood Park ended in frustration.
Motherwell and Kilmarnock are also keen on securing Goodwillie’s services but the Dons are eager to land another attacker, having released Calvin Zola, Scott Vernon and Josh Magennis.
Kris Boyd, who was also a free agent after leaving Kilmarnock, was high on Aberdeen’s wanted list but he opted to return for a second spell at Rangers.
Dons assistant manager Tony Docherty is an admirer of Goodwillie, having worked with him while he was a coach at Dundee United.
Docherty said yesterday: “I worked with Goody at Tannadice but he’s like other players on the list. Teams are looking at him and he has been training with St Johnstone. He’s a good player but we have good players here as we saw in the match against Daugava. Adam Rooney scored two and we have got players who can score.”
Docherty, meanwhile, said speculation linking English Championship club Blackpool with a move for Peter Pawlett was news to him.
He said: “I am not aware of that. There were quite a few clubs up watching our game against Daugava Riga and I am not surprised given the level of our performances. It is not just Peter Pawlett – we have had a lot of players putting in good displays.”
Pawlett was substituted in the 5-0 win at Pittodrie with an ankle injury and Docherty said: “It will be touch and go whether he is right for Thursday.”
