Dons fans are eagerly anticipating David Goodwillie’s first outing at Pittodrie after Derek McInnes announced his marquee summer signing yesterday.
It seems like a dream partnership in the making, with the former Dundee United striker lining up alongside Adam Rooney up front. In fact it’s potentially the best strike force in the SPFL…
However, as everyone is aware, despite his talents, David Goodwillie comes with baggage. And his form over the past few seasons hasn’t exactly set the heather on fire.
So we thought we’d bring to the fore eight key facts about David Goodwillie you may or may not have known.
1- An interesting comparison:
Played for the same junior team as Duncan Ferguson in Stirlingshire – Carse Thistle… Perhaps this sets the scene for the next one.
2- Bit of a hard man:
He has a chequered past and has gotten into a few scraps in a variety of nightclubs in Stirling and Glasgow. Most notably he knocked-out an 18-stone rugby player in a Stirling nightclub in 2009.
3 – Highs and lows:
Scored 29 league goals in his first spell with Dundee United. But has only scored 8 league goals since 2011 for other clubs.
4- From ‘the business’ to ‘disappointment’:
Dundee United chairman Stephen Thomson described his return to Dundee United as ‘a disappointment’ last season. That was just six months after describing his arrival as ‘showing United mean business’.
5- Decorated:
Won SPFA Young Player of the Year award for 2010-11.
6- High praise:
Was once likened to a ‘young Wayne Rooney’ by then Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean.
7- Cool under pressure:
Scored a penalty against World Champions Spain in a 3-1 loss as Scotland failed to qualify for Euro 2012.
8- Not the best stats:
Last season in Scotland David Goodwillie scored the same number of league goals as Calvin Zola and got as many assists as Jamie Langfield.
