Adam Rooney last night became the first Aberdeen player to score a hat-trick in European football for 30 years as the Dons cantered to Europa League victory against Daugava Riga in Latvia last night.
Not since Mark McGhee in a European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final win against Hugarian side Ujpest Dozsa in March 1984 had a Dons player netted a treble against European opposition.
The Irishman made it look easy.
The Dons were cantering after winning the opening leg 5-0 at Pittodrie last week and stamped their authority on the match in Riga with a superb first-half hat-trick from Rooney.
The former Caley Thistle and Birmingham City centre-forward showed he is ready for the start of next month’s Scottish Premiership season with a lethal display of finishing which left the Daugava defence ruined and reeling.
