Dons boss not fooled by recent Dundee results

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has warned his players not to be fooled by Dundee’s recent run of results.

The Dons travel to Dens Park today to face a Dark Blues side reeling from two derby defeats by Dundee United and a loss at Ross County, who had previously lost all seven of their league games.

The Reds have recorded three wins and a draw in the same period and will head to Tayside with confidence but McInnes insists it cannot be misplaced. He said: “The last three results have been disappointing for Dundee but they have acquitted themselves well since they came up.

“I read Paul Hartley’s comments about them not having scored a lot of goals since they came up and it is something they are looking to address but they haven’t conceded too many either. Paul has a team which looks well equipped to compete in the top flight.”

Aberdeen’s confidence took a dent after the Dons let a two-goal lead slip in their 2-2 draw with St Mirren on Tuesday. Having watched the game again, McInnes believes the goals were the only negatives of an otherwise positive display from his side.

He said: “The performance for the majority of the game on Tuesday was excellent. We went for the three points and that’s something we will look to do more of, certainly at home.

“The first goal we lost was avoidable but we didn’t need to give them that opportunity while the second goal was a mistake from Mark Reynolds and it was avoidable, too. But a lot of what we did was good. We worked well within our system and that level of performance would normally win us the game. The fact we didn’t is why we feel so disappointed but I can’t be too critical. Three points against Dundee would be a decent return.”
