‘Take my money’ – Aberdeen and Caley Thistle fans give their new kits the seal of approval

At what age should you stop getting excited about new kit launches?

The answer, of course, is never.

There was plenty to whet the appetite for the new season as Aberdeen unveiled their new home and away kits for the 2022-23 campaign.

With the 40th anniversary of Aberdeen’s famous Cup Winners’ Cup victory fast approaching, it was no surprise that the Gothenburg strip worn in 1983 acted as the inspiration for this season’s kit.

The white pinstripe design is replicated for this season’s home kit while the away kit mirrors the 82-83 version.

But was it a winner with the fans?

‘I’m loving it’

The feedback from the Red Army appears to be overwhelmingly positive towards the new strips.

Ronnie Martin wrote on Facebook: “After a week of more than decent transfer activity, ending it with this is the cherry on the cake.”

Bob Shand described it as the “best looking strip in years” while Gilbert Falconer wrote: “As they say in the McDonalds advert, I’m loving it!”

Ian Will said they were “brilliant”, adding: “Just need the players to show the same commitment in training and in games as the great 82-83 team.”

Morag Fleming added: “This is the best kit release since the 80’s. Love them both.”

Kevin Main barked: “Woof, best top in years.”

David Muir felt they were the “best since the JVC kits” and Craig Robb said: “The new kits are always a cause for complaint, shouldn’t be any for these two.”

‘A nod to Inverness Thistle’

Caley Thistle also revealed their new away kit for the 2022-23 season and it also contained a nod to the club’s history.

Inverness Thistle famously wore red and black kits during their time in the Highland League before merging with Inverness Caledonian and joining the Scottish League in 1994.

Andy McIvor wrote: “Best away top the club has ever had.”

Anne Urquhart said: “Love it! Their best strip yet! The Jags live on!” while Kate Beaton added: “Good – Thistle given its rightful place!”

Dion Davis wasn’t as impressed, saying: “Very plain. Could have been better. Looks like a stock kit template.”

Lance Shaw disagreed, saying: “A nod to Inverness Thistle. I LOVE IT.”

George Noble wrote: “I’ve always been a Caley fan but I see and like what the club has done. I just won’t be buying it, lol.”

Neil Cameron added: “Not for me as a Caley fan but I’m sure the Thistle fans will be happy with this.”

Lisa Campbell wrote: “Love this away top! Bringing the Thistle heritage into it. Defo need to be buying this!”

Graham Newlands wrote: “More Thistle than Caley. Hope the home shirt is blue.”

But Ian MacLeod appeared to be impressed, writing: “AC Milan of the Highlands.”
