Joe Harper: Aberdeen fans will be entertained this season by rebuilt team

Aberdeen's Luis Lopes made his debut against Stirling Albion.
Aberdeen's Luis Lopes made his debut against Stirling Albion.

Aberdeen supporters look set to be entertained by positive, attacking football after Jim Goodwin’s summer rebuild.

Manager Goodwin has injected real pace, energy, quality and intent to the squad with his seven signings to date in the transfer window.

It looks like this team will get the Red Army up and out of their seats in excitement.

That is what we all want. To be entertained on the way to wins and success.

Aberdeens’ Vicente Besuijen celebrates scoring against Stirling Albion in the Premier Sports Cup.

After suffering such a disappointing time last season the early signs are Red Army can look forward to some good times this campaign.

I have been impressed with the quality and pace of the football played by this new-look team in the winning start to the season.

The Dons have moved the ball quickly and accurately along the deck.

The goal scored by Christian Ramirez against Stirling Albion was hopefully an indication of the football to come.

Liam Scales played a pinpoint through ball to the onrushing Jonny Hayes who immediately crossed low for Ramirez to score.

It was one touch football – touch, touch, goal and great to watch.

More of the same please.

Granted the Dons have only played lower league opposition Stirling Albion, Dumbarton and Peterhead in the Premier Sports Cup so far.

However you can only beat the team in front of you and the Reds have achieved that comfortably in every game.

They have also secured three straight clean sheets and it is pleasing to see the defence looking solid.

Aberdeen’s Matty Kennedy scores with a free kick to make it 3-0 against Stirling Albion.

Ultimately the real test will come in the Premiership, particularly the season opener at league champions Celtic on Sunday July 31.

But what I have seen so far has left me genuinely optimistic for the campaign.

All the Aberdeen players look hungry and fired up.

Boss Goodwin also said that no player is safe from being dropped if standards slip.

That is great to hear. It is the way it should be as there must be that constant pressure, and competition, in every single position for players to perform.

Aberdeen’s Christian Ramirez scores to make it 2-0 against Stirling Albion.

The Dons have improved significantly since the opening game of the season when beating Peterhead 2-0.

You can see all the hard work that has been put in on the training ground is paying off.

That continual progression needs to be maintained up to the league opener against Celtic.

Facing Celtic away from home on the opening day will give us all a true indication of how the season will pan out.

Although there have been so many new signings there already seems to be a chemistry and understanding amongst the team.

New signing Luis Lopes made his debut when coming on at half-time in the 5-0 defeat of Stirling Albion.

Aberdeen’s Luis Lopes in action against Stirling Albion on his debut following a move from Benfica.

The former Benfica striker was clearly short of match fitness but that sharpness will come.

Lopes, also known as Duk, looks like he will add another potent option to Aberdeen’s attack.

Aberdeen fans can also look forward to the long awaited debut of striker Bojan Miovski at the weekend.

The North Macedonian striker signed from MTK Budapest a month ago.

However the drawn out nature of the visa application process delayed his debut.

Hopefully he will be well worth waiting for.

Catch 22 for Dons with Liam Scales

Aberdeen will hopefully secure Celtic centre-back Liam Scales on a permanent deal when the January transfer window opens.

I have been very impressed with Scales who was secured on a season-long loan from the Premiership champions.

Unfortunately Scales will be unavailable for the Premiership opener at Celtic due to the terms of his loan agreement.

Aberdeen’s Liam Scales (R) and Stirling Albions’ Kieran Moore during the Premier Sports Cup match.

Scales is already impressing at Aberdeen and looks to be forging a strong partnership with captain Anthony Stewart at the back.

It could be a catch-22 situation with Scales though because if he continues to impress Celtic may want to take him back.

Or another club could move to sign him. Or his valuation will rocket.

That is for further down the road though and for now Scales can hopefully be at the centre of a strong defence.

New captain Stewart looks very solid at right-sided centre back.

Aberdeen’s Liam Scales (4) during the 2-0 Premier Sports Cup defeat of Peterhead.

Fellow summer signing Jayden Richardson has impressed me as he is very quick and powerful down the flank.

The new-look defence have registered three straight clean sheets in the Premier Sports Cup.

Aberdeen captain Anthony Stewart leads out the team against Peterhead in the Premier Sports Cup.

Aberdeen top the group and I fully expect them to win the group by overcoming Raith Rovers at Pittodrie on Sunday.

The Dons were sent tumbling out of the tournament last season by Raith.

There will be no repeat this season as Aberdeen are dangerous in attack, creative in midfield and tight at the back.

Winger Matty Kennedy rejuvenated

Thankfully winger Matty Kennedy looks to have fully recovered from the back injury that derailed his campaign last season.

Kennedy made just a handful of starts last season as he battled the back injury.

He looks rejuvenated this season and has been highly influential for the Dons.

Kennedy has netted in back to back games against Stirling Albion and Dumbarton.

His free-kick against Stirling was a cracker. Long may it continue.
