The January transfer has well and truly kicked into action – inquiries have been made for three Scotland internationalists, south of the border a striker has moved for almost £30million and closer to home an Aberdeen defender has moved on loan.
We take a quick look at the biggest transfer window stories of the day.
Scots on the move
Shaun Maloney
Wigan and Leicester City have agreed a fee for Scotland playmaker Shaun Maloney.
The fee is believed to be in the region of £1million for Maloney, whose Wigan deal runs out in the summer.
Earlier this month Latics manager Malky Mackay had revealed “four or five clubs” had expressed an interest in the 31-year-old while also confirming one team, believed to be Leicester, had seen an initial offer rebuffed.
However, Maloney is now free to discuss personal terms with the Foxes after they lodged an improved bid.
Maloney moved to Wigan from Celtic in 2011 and has enjoyed many highlights with the club including scoring the winner against Manchester United in April 2012 and netting a last-gasp free-kick in the draw at QPR 12 months on.
But his fondest memory is likely to be the FA Cup final success over Manchester City in 2013 when his corner was headed home by Ben Watson to seal a famous cup upset at Wembley.
Darren Fletcher
West Brom have reportedly made an approach for Manchester United and Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
Fletcher was named United’s vice-captain during the summer, however, he has found his first team opportunities limited this season and new West Brom boss Tony Pulis wants to add the midfielder to his squad as he fights to keep the Baggies in the Premier League.
Fletcher has won a Champions League and five league titles during his time at Old Trafford and could bring valuable experience to the West Brom squad.
Gary MacKay-Steven
Celtic have approached Dundee United over winger Gary Mackay-Steven, whose Tannadice contract expires in the summer.
Celtic are keen to offer Mackay-Steven a pre-contract argeement to join the club in the summer, however, in order to do that, they must first outline their intentions to Dundee United.
Mackay-Steven earned his only Scotland cap to date in November 2013 but this season has again shown the form which saw him called up for the national team.
Sheffield United have already had two January bids turned down for the winger but with his contract running down, and a number of clubs showing an interest, the Tangerines may be tempted into selling him now rather than losing him for nothing in the summer.
Young Don on the move
Craig Murray
Aberdeen under-20 captain Craig Murray today joined Ayr United on loan until the end of the season.
The youngster made his first start for the Dons last month against Caley Thistle and has now joined Ian McCall’s League One side to gain further experience.
Big moves down south
Wilfried Bony
Manchester City have completed the signing of striker Wilfried Bony from Swansea for a reported fee of £28million.
The clubs confirmed the transfer of the 26-year-old Ivory Coast striker on their official websites on this afternoon, with the striker penning a four-and-a-half-year contract.
Bony had earlier been pictured holding a Manchester City shirt at the Ivory Coast’s pre-African Nations Cup camp in Abu Dhabi, from where his international federation had revealed on Wednesday morning that he had signed for the Barclays Premier League champions.
Jermaine Defoe
Jermain Defoe is to undergo a medical at Sunderland as he closes in on a return to English football.
A transfer fee and personal terms have been agreed and the 32-year-old Toronto FC striker will now have medical checks within the next 24 hours in order to complete his switch to the Black Cats.
Maurice Edu
Former Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu has completed a permanent move from Stoke to Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union… after playing just nine minutes of football for the Premier League outfit since joining in August 2012.
The 28-year-old United States international midfielder spent the recent MLS season on loan to Philadelphia, making 31 appearances.
