When Aberdeen take to the field against Dundee United tomorrow it will be 824 days since they last conceded a goal in the League Cup.
Remarkably the Dons made it through the whole of 2013 and 2014 without conceding a goal in the competition.
Indeed, the Dons are yet to lose a goal in the League Cup since Derek McInnes took charge. The last time their defence was breached in the competition was on October 30, 2012 when Craig Brown’s Dons were defeated on penalties by St Mirren.
The Buddies had twice led the match through Sam Parkin and Kenny McLean but goals from Scott Vernon and a last-minute equaliser from Josh Magennis meant the tie went the distance. After extra time failed to produce a winner, then 17-year-old Cammy Smith missed the decisive spot-kick which meant the Dons missed out on a semi-final.
The Buddies went on to win the competition, while Aberdeen’s wait for silverware went on a little longer.
Since that defeat, the Dons have went seven matches without letting in a goal in League Cup football.
They have been pushed all the way to penalties on two occasions but emerged victorious both times, most notably in last year’s final against Caley Thistle.
