Aberdeen Women won their first game of the SWPL 1 season and their first-ever at Pittodrie as they defeated Glasgow Women 2-0.
Nadine Hanssen etched her name into Aberdeen FC history as she became the first female goalscorer for the Dons at Pittodrie when she put her side 1-0 up.
Her goal in the 18th minute deservedly put Aberdeen ahead after they had dominated play in front of 1,652 fans at Pittodrie.
Jess Broadrick doubled the Dons’ lead two minutes before-half time as she scored her first goal of the season with a powerful header from a corner.
There were no more goals in the entertaining clash at Pittodrie as the two first-half headers were enough for Aberdeen to pick up their first three points of the campaign.
Aberdeen Women show Pittodrie crowd what they can do
The Dons made two changes from the defeat to Hibs, as Millie Urquhart and Bailley Collins replaced Donna Paterson and the suspended Eilidh Shore.
It was a lively start for the home side as they worked the ball into the final third and Mya Christie spun to find Bayley Hutchison, but her first touched knocked the ball out.
Collins then hit a shot from just outside the box which trailed wide, but it was a promising opening few minutes for Aberdeen.
Soon, the Reds won a free-kick 20 yards out, which saw the home crowd get excited, but Chloe Gover’s attempt was hit straight at Glasgow keeper Shannon Burgeon.
It was wave after wave of attack from the Dons as Gover got the better of two Glasgow players down the left flan,k but her final ball into the box was poor.
And the Aberdeen fans didn’t have to wait long for something to cheer about as Hanssen scored her first goal for the club as she put the Dons 1-0 up in 18th minute.
Hanssen, who only signed for the Reds last month, did well to direct her header into the bottom corner after being the first to meet the ball from a Francesca Ogilvie free-kick.
She should’ve had her brace just minutes later as she attempted an overhead kick in the box, but this time her effort came back off the post.
Hutchison had a chance to make it 2-0 as she was played clear through with a long ball over the top, but Glasgow’s Jade Wilson did well and tracked back to deny the striker.
Collins then went so close to scoring a goal of the season contender as she hit a rocket of a shot from 30 yards out which forced Burgeon into a fingertip save.
Aberdeen’s Annalisa McCann only had one save to make in the first-half and it was an easy one at that as Glasgow’s Niamh Scott tried her luck from distance with a tame shot.
And, in the 43rd minute, the Main Stand had something else to celebrate as the Dons went 2-0 up when defender Broadrick powered home a header from a Gover corner.
The Dons in control at the interval
Just before the hour mark, Eva Thomson had the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out for offside, which prompted boos from the Pittodrie crowd.
In a crowded box, Hutchison had chipped the ball – which took a deflection – over the defence to find Thomson, but the flag was raised just as the ball crossed the line.
Aberdeen skipper Loren Campbell then had a go with a cross/shot which the Glasgow keeper unconfidently collected in the air before going down injured.
At the other end, Glasgow’s Olivia King hit her side’s best effort so far as she had a go with a long-range strike from the right wing which landed on the roof of the net.
Thomson looked to get on the scoresheet and make it count this time with a shot from outside the box, but it was well held by a diving Burgeon in the Glasgow goal.
Aberdeen made two changes with 15 minutes left on the clock as Thomson and Gover made way for forward Hannah Stewart and midfielder Brodie Greenwood.
In the dying minutes, long-serving midfielder Natasha Bruce replaced Collins, while 16-year-old Madison Finnie replaced Urquhart in defence.
McCann had to make a fine save to deny Glasgow with seconds left on the clock, as she pushed a strike from inside the box round the post to ensure herself a clean sheet.
