Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has urged his players to make a good start a brilliant one in the Scottish Premiership.
The Dons made it three wins in a row as they maintained their 100% start to the new campaign with a fine 2-1 win at Motherwell on Saturday.
The result was the first time the Dons have won the opening three games of the season since the 1991-92 campaign and, while pleased with the start his side has made, McInnes knows it can get even better with victory against Dundee at home on Saturday.
It was the same 1991-92 campaign when the Dons last won their opening four league matches, under manager Alex Smith, and, as encouraging as the start has been this term, McInnes knows there is still room for improvement.
He said: “We’ve got off to a decent start in the Premiership and I want that to continue.
“I’m looking for consistency as quickly as possible and we’ve had a good start but if we want to make it a brilliant one we have to keep winning games.
“We know if we can play to the level we are capable of we can give ourselves a good chance of doing that.”
The Dons have been tipped to be Celtic’s main challengers again this season but the Aberdeen manager insists it is far too early to be talking of title challenges at Pittodrie.
Bettering last season’s tally of 75 points is the only target McInnes is focusing on and, with nine points from a possible nine already accumulated, the early signs are encouraging for the club and supporters.
McInnes added: “We shouldn’t shy away from the challenge of bettering last season. There was a lot to be pleased about but we didn’t win a trophy. We want to be more consistent.
“It took us until October to really get going and we dropped a lot of points early on so a good start is pleasing. But good is all it is and we have to keep it going and build on it.
“We cannot affect what happens outwith our games and all we are focusing on is getting into a rhythm and consistency. That’s all I’m looking at.”
Aberdeen’s win at Fir Park came at a cost on Saturday, however, as midfielder Willo Flood was replaced at half-time after suffering an ankle injury.
The Dons manager rates the Irishman as doubtful for the visit of Dundee to Pittodrie on Saturday but said: “Willo’s ankle blew up right away and he has slight ligament damage but we are hoping it’s nothing too serious.”
Dons forward Adam Rooney, pictured, has been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for Euro 2016 qualifying matches against Gibraltar and Georgia next month.
