McInnes backs Church to add to Dons attacking threat

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes believes Simon Church has given the Dons another dimension in attack.

MK Dons forward Church, has made an immediate impression following his loan move from the English Championship club, scoring the winner against Celtic on his debut before impressing alongside Adam Rooney in Aberdeen’s 4-3 win at St Johnstone on Saturday.

McInnes is delighted to see Church, who pushed for a move to Pittodrie when he learned of Aberdeen’s interest, settle in quickly and believes the move to Scotland can be beneficial for both the player and his new club.

The Dons manager said: “Simon is a player we think will be able to show his qualities.

“He comes in with a bit of stature and reputation and has good personality. He’ll be another added threat for us, in addition to what we have.

“We have provided a good platform for players at Aberdeen.

“Players like Simon may see our profile and a lot of our games will be on TV, so he sees the importance of playing in a good team and one that is used to winning.

“That has continued with him in it. It’s short-term but, hopefully, he’ll enjoy his time like other signings we have brought in.”

McInnes had to be patient to get his man but hopes the need to impress Wales manager Chris Coleman ahead of this summer’s European championship finals in France will bring out the best in the 27 year-old and benefit the Dons.

The Aberdeen manager said: “With 33 caps to his name and the Euros to look forward to, he needs to make sure he finishes the season strong.

“Not just to cement his place in the Wales squad but to get himself ahead of one or two others within that. He was in the Reading team that I remember him from and they got a lot of crosses into the box which he thrived on.

“Hopefully, with the service we hope he gets here, he’ll go and show qualities and I’m delighted to get him.

“He is bursting with enthusiams to be here and that pleases me no end.

“Simon is a player we like. I spoke with MK Dons manager Carl Robinson a few weeks back and they needed to get an attacker and one or two things at their end, so they needed something to fall for them before they would let him go.

“Last Monday morning we got a bit of encouragement but it was dependant on their signings being finalised.

“It was agreed Monday afternoon. It was never a certainty but we’re very happy with the start he is has made.”
