Paul Hartley’s desire to bolster his Cove Rangers squad has increased after Mitch Megginson limped off in Saturday’s Betfred Cup tie against Peterhead.
Megginson suffered a thigh injury and left the field after 17 minutes, leaving Cove without a recognised striker for the remainder of the game.
Martin Scott was suspended for the game at Balmoor, while Jordan MacRae and Paul McManus left in the summer. Daniel Park played the remainder of the game as a striker.
Hartley is already working on new additions, given he could only name three outfield substitutes, but the blow of losing Megginson exacerbates the issue.
He said: “We need to look at his thigh, it might be a little sprain. He might be out for a couple of weeks or he might recover a bit quicker. We’re really low on numbers just now so we’ve got to look to see if we can bring someone in. A striker was always on our wishlist – we have to be strong in that area, in case we get an injury to Jimmy or Mitch.
“We’re short on a couple of areas – I could only put three outfield players on the bench today. We’re working really hard to strengthen the group.”
The Cove boss, who returned to the dugout earlier this month, was pleased with his side’s work against the League 1 outfit but insists there is no room for self-pity.
Hartley said: “Overall, the players can be pleased with that. We’ve not got a lot of bodies and we’ve had to make a change after 10 minutes. We had to rejig it because we’re not big on numbers. There wasn’t a great deal between the two teams and there were a lot of pleasing signs.
“I don’t want hard-luck stories every week. If you switch off at this level you’ll get punished and I’ve said that to the players. We’ve got to keep improving – we’ve always said the Betfred games were a build on pre-season. This is only our fourth game and most of the guys have played every minute.”
